Before egg donation, meet someone

Search for egg donation and you’ll find banks, catalogs and clinics, with prices. Just a Baby is none of those. It’s where you meet the person, before any of that.

People who are thinking about family meet here. Some hope to be parents and know they’ll need eggs to get there. Some would love to help a family happen. Whether that ever includes eggs is a conversation two people have once they know each other, not a box on a profile. Nobody is listed, priced or picked from a page. You find out who someone is first, by talking to them, and then you both decide whether there’s anything more to talk about.

Just a Baby is not an egg bank, and it is not a clinic. It’s the step before either.

Meet the person first

An egg bank gives you a profile: height, eye color, a childhood photo, a questionnaire. It’s a lot of facts and no person. Here you get the person. You can ask her why she’d want to help someone. She can ask you what kind of family you hope to make. You can find out whether you like each other, which turns out to matter a great deal when a child is involved.

So make a profile that says who you are and what you hope for. Look around. Talk to people you’d like to know. Meet a few, or meet a lot, until you meet someone who feels right. There’s no deadline, and nobody keeping score.

If you’re a woman who has wondered about helping someone this way, it works the same for you. Say as much or as little as you like about that, along with what you’re open to and what you’re not. Some women want to help and then step back. Some would like to stay in touch, or to be known to the child one day. You choose who you talk to, and you can say no at any point.

The words are yours

Egg donor is the term people search for, so it’s the one on this page. It isn’t the only one. The people who meet here call each other all sorts of things: donor, helper, egg mom, auntie, friend. Some invent a word of their own, and some are happy with donor. We think whatever you choose between you is the right word for now, and that a child may well find words of their own as they grow. Our job is the introduction. The names are yours.

What Just a Baby does and doesn’t do

It helps you meet, talk and get to know each other. That’s the whole job.

If two people who met here decide they want to go further, that’s when the professionals come in: a lawyer where each of you lives, a doctor, and whichever clinic you choose. We’re all for it. If we can help you find your way to them, we’ll do our best. Everything from there belongs to you and to them.

Before you agree anything

Helping someone with eggs is a generous thing, and a serious one. Before anything is agreed, talk to a lawyer and a doctor where you live, and make sure everyone involved does the same. Talk about what each of you hopes for, now and years from now. Talk about staying in touch, and about what the child will be told. Agree it clearly, and only once everyone is sure.
